http://www.army.mil/modularforces/index.htm

its very interesting it seems like there abandoning the concept of the "Division" as we know it. instead the primary unit will be the Brigade Combat Team, so basically any 3 or 4 brigades combined with a Divisional Headquarters will form a Div.

from what i gather in theory, say a Theater commander is granted command of a Div. he is then given command of 3-4 different brigades that could be each from a different division, they would then be assembled under a Divisional Headquarters and would act as one unit, the Brigades will however with 2 exceptions still retain there "Lineage", as in History, tradition, unit colors and so on.

it does seem like a very interesting concept that would allow them alot more fexibility because in as i understand it a commander can pick and choose units depending on the mission and have 1 Airborne, 1 Armored and 1 Infantry brigade act together as one Div.

edit from a tournament stand point its pretty cool because we can assemble dif brigades historically from dif divisions and assemble them under one divisional title

That is interesting, and when you think about it, you wonder why they never implemented that idea before. Mix and match what you need for the objective just makes sense.

There restructuring to basically reflect what the Marines have been doing all along.

The Army is also adjusting the capability of alot of it units to a more rapid deployment element like that of the Marines.

The Marines can have a full contengent of Infantry, Armor and Air (Fixed and Rotor wing) anywhere in the world in 24hrs.

The Army is starting to employ that ideal because as it is now, it takes them weeks to get there Armor and Helos into the theater of operations.

By that time, the Marines have handled buisness and all the Army needs at that time is mops to clean up after us

its kinda like the command structure israel was using during the war of 1973 (i cant assure you its the same today), in each theater of war there were about 2 - 3 div. but these div. arnt like 1st. armored, or 11th marines (just exaples), they were named after the div. commader and thats because the regulars part of the army is only 1/3 of the total force so you have only 2 armor brigades, for 3 div. (barak brigade and the 7th armored, at the biggining of the war in the north) and each of that div also had its mech. units, infantry, and paras.
i think that kind of stratagy is better, and like said flexible, that way the div. can handle itself in every situation, and not have to wait for the armor to mobilize form one sector to another.

Thats interesting. That the army is taking a page out of navy's book.

Also i think that as long as they're restructuring , change the standard round from the 5.56 to the 7.62
