Introduction
The Mod of the Year Awards is the signature event of the gaming community for players looking to create and play something different. Millions of fans gather together over the course of two months to honor the dedication, creativity and hard work independent developers put into creating unique gaming experiences for others to enjoy. Everyone votes, anticipation mounts and come January, ambition finally pays off when the mods that redefined the limits of gaming in 2006 are recognized.
A modification, or "mod," is a variation of an original game that can be freely downloaded over the internet. These variations can be minor: tweaking characters, enhancing weapons, rebuilding levels, or modifying different aspects of gameplay. A modification can also be epic in scope, creating an entirely new product using a core game as a foundation to be built off of.
Regardless of their size, making a mod is an opportunity for experienced and amateur developers to creatively express themselves. They are empowered to produce original game concepts that challenge the status quo and to share their efforts to with fellow gamers and developers alike. Mods unlock the true power of games, and it is time to recognize the people making this magic happen.
Objective
The Mod of the Year Awards kick off on November 2007, showcasing the best mods in the world and the teams that built them. Winners in each category are determined by you, players and fellow modders, and you will choose the project which reaches gaming-extremes and defines exactly what the cutting edge of entertainment is.
